US Ambassador to Nepal

US Ambassador to Nepal, Ms. Alaina B. Teplitz visited Jajarkote tole, Chhinchu, Surkhet and interacted with beneficiaries of KISAN and USAID’s Business Literacy Program for around 1.5 hours in the morning of February 11, 2016. Both projects are under implementation with the support of USAID. The Ambassador was accompanied by Acting Mission Director Ms. Amy Tohill-Stull and other staffs from USAID.

 

The beneficiaries gathered were largely women, who reported that literacy and numeracy skills learned from Business Literacy Program has enhanced their enterprising capacities and they are able to utilize the agriculture technologies offered by KISAN. The beneficiaries reported that they are scaling their agri enterprises and have enhanced their confidence. The Ambassador also inquired if children are healthy enough. The beneficiaries replied that the agriculture production enhanced with the support of KISAN and the knowledge of nutrition received from Business Literacy Program have helped keep their children healthy. They also explained that now they are contributing more for the growth of their families so their husbands and others are treating them better.

 

There was a two way interaction between participants and the Ambassador; she was much happy with the response and the level of progress seen among participants.

BLP has been implemented by DEPROSC-Nepal, which is also an implementing partner of KISAN under the lead role of Winrock International. The visit was also attended by Mr. Pitambar Prasad Acharya (Executive Director of DEPROSC) and other DEPROSC staff.

 

The discussion was concluded that BLP and KISAN make a good package.

 

The team also observed the photographs of program, which reflected the working modality and progress.

 

After the discussion, the team also observed the vegetable plot managed by participants in assistance of technical input by KISAN. This was 3 minutes down the location of the business literacy class. Tomato, cauliflower, cabbage, potato were observed and an irrigation scheme, off-season vegetation, germinating plot was observed as well.

 

Her Excellency US Ambassador departed from the location with the closing note that Business Literacy has done a great job.

 

DEPROSC is very much encouraged from the visit from Ambassador level and recognition of its service from USAID.
